Sounds like: Don’t let them feminine reputation fool you, their music is a kick-ass concoction of alterative rock, punk and metal laced with pop melodies.
From Kalayaan College in Quezon City comes this all-female group. The band found its name in a Biology book. Nyctinasty is defined as “plant movement in response to darkness.” Their upcoming debut indie release will be under Lighter Records (home to Cebu based-acts such as The Ambassadors, Point Click Kill, Faspitch and Urbandub).
Noodle and Pat originally formed a band with two male ex-bandmates. The guys eventually eased themselves out of the group that left the two girls searching for new bandmates. They eventually found Nikki and Levi through common friends.
“It was like magic, madali kaming nakasulat ng songs,” says Noodle.
The band played in small gigs until they got their big break in Mag:net at Bonifacion High Street, Taquig City, where they firt met Lighter Records main man Alex “Phat Boy” Lim. “Kapal ng mukha namain, lasing kaming lumapit kina Lalay (Lim, Urbandub bassist) and Alex para maparinig at maabot yung demo naming.” Nyctinasty earned the distinction of being the first Manila-based band in the Lighter Records roster. Alex did not lose time in playing guardian to them. “Basta lagi niyang bilin samin that every time we play kahit konti lang ang tao kailangan top level pa rin ang performance,” says Noodle. “At kailangan parating on time sa gigs.”
Some young bands fool you with music that’s “good for their age,” but this band is good, period. Their musical influences include punk outfit Rufio and hardcore act Poison the Wall. They are currently recording their debut album The Sleep Movement with producer Eric Perlas.
